How To Make A Living Doing Makeup

One day you realized your favorite place to shop was the makeup store to get a lip gloss, blush, concealer and achieve different makeup looks. You started doing videos and blogs filled with makeup reviews and tutorials so that you could save some money on makeup purchases by getting free samples from companies that wanted to be featured by you. Now you want to turn your love of makeup into a full blown career rather than just a hobby.

So what do you do?

Consider Going To School

While schooling isn’t free, or cheap, it can help you get the education you need to get the career you need to make the money you’ll need to pay it off, and to make a living doing what you love. Take some time to research the best schools in the field of makeup, and pick the one that will work best with what you want to do.

The type of makeup you want to do will also have a determining factor in what school you go to and what courses you chose to take. Maybe you want to work with models, or maybe you’d prefer doing FX makeup for movies. There are many options.

Work At A Beauty Store

Even without a beauty school education you could choose to work at your favorite local beauty store. Many of those stores do allow you the chance to help people pick the right makeup and even show them how to use it. You may even find that you could get training through them or get reimbursement for taking beauty school courses.

Get Into School Plays

If you’re still in high school or even in college, you could participate in school plays and the drama group. This is a great place to get your feet wet when it comes to learning to do stage makeup. And this will also look good on your future resumes.

Make sure to take photos of the work that you do. This will allow you a jumpstart when it comes to creating your professional portfolio to show people when you start looking for work in the makeup industry.

Volunteer At A Haunted House

If FX makeup is your thing, one way to get some great experience is to volunteer at a local haunted house during the Halloween season. You may get a chance to create makeup that scares people, or at least gives them a bad dream or two.

Before you do too much work without your beauty school certificate, make sure that you look into the laws and certification needs in the area or state in which you live. There are diseases that can be spread with makeup and the tools you use to apply it. You want to make sure you protect yourself and your career investment.
