If you love cars, then I am sure that you know what a PCM is. Nonetheless, a PCM or Power train Control Module is a computer or control unit that is installed in your car. The main purpose of the Power train Control Module (PCM) is to serve as your car’s engine control system. It is made up of the engine control unit (ECU), the transmission unit, the charging system, and other control systems in the vehicle.

With the PCM being an essential component of a car, every car owner must ensure that the computer and all its components are in good working condition at all times. However, your Ford PCM or engine control module (ECM) may fail at some point for one reason or another.

When the PCM fails, the very first thing you are advised to do is take it for diagnostic testing. After the diagnostic testing, the mechanic will determine for sure whether or not you need to find a replacement. And since replacement is the most recommended way of dealing with PCM issues no matter how big or small, you will have no option but to find a new one. It is then that reality will hit you hard; finding a replacement PCM is not as easy as you might have imagined.

Not to worry though; mentioned below are some useful tips and tricks for you when purchasing and replacing your Ford PCM.

  • Find the right PCM –Power train control modules are designed according to car models. So, don’t be tricked into buying a PCM that does not match your car. You can use the service ID on your damaged PCM to purchase a new one. This will help you find the right computer for your car.

After buying your new PCM, it is time to unplug the faulty one and here is how you do it.

  • First, find the location of your faulty PCM. In some cars, the PCM is located under the seats while for others, you will find it in the trunk. However, before unplugging it, make sure that you have disconnected the PCM from the car battery.
  • Carefully disconnect all the connectors and wires and slowly remove the old PCM. Install the new one, reconnect all the connectors and make sure that there are no wires that are damaged or bent in the process. Reconnect the PCM to the battery.
  • Lastly, take your car for a short test drive so that the engine control module or power train control module can configure itself.

As a final point, always remember that for your PCM to perform, it will need the appropriate battery voltage as per your car model and uninterrupted sensor inputs.
