If you have been hoping to get a promotion for some time yet, but you have not been approached for one, it can be incredibly frustrating. What are you doing wrong? Why aren’t you being considered for a step up? Are you in the wrong job altogether? Read on to discover some of the reasons why you may not have been promoted yet…

You have not taken any initiative – In order to be considered for promotions, you need to take the initiative. This means being quick on your feet to generate ideas. You should be someone that looks out for problems and then turns them into plans and solutions without being asked. Don’t always ask permission or opinions; go ahead and do it. What’s the worst that could happen?

Your boss thinks you are a threat – You should not always expect complete rationality from bosses. Yes, the good ones will promote you if you are reaching your targets and then some, and you are making them look good. Nevertheless, there are those who may think you are doing too good and, therefore, you are a threat to them!

You are dispensable – In order to be considered for a promotion, you need to become indispensable. You need to show how amazing you are, and you need to make yourself an employee that the firm simply cannot do without.

You have not invested in yourself – You should not sit around and wait for opportunities to come to you. You need to be proactive. You need to look for your own opportunities to enhance your skills and take them to the next level. Nowadays, this is easy thanks to online training. You can easily take an FNP program online, or any other type of degree or course you are interested in. This shows passion and commitment to your job, and this is likely to look good in the eyes of your employer. Even if you don’t get promoted, you are going to put yourself in a great position should you decide to switch jobs.

You haven’t asked – Last but not least, you know what they say, if you don’t ask, you don’t get. Instead of sitting and waiting patiently for your promotion, why don’t you ask your employer about it? Come armed with information that backs up you are ready for a step up. You may have simply been overlooked because your employer did not realise you were looking for more.

Hopefully, you now have a better understanding as to why you are yet to be promoted. Use the information that has been provided above to help you get to the bottom of where you are going wrong so you can put some steps in place to rectify them and put yourself to the top of the promotion list.
