We have all had those times where your time is limited and you have to eat while en route to your destination. While you are driving, it is of the utmost importance to remain aware and safe, no matter what you are eating.
Pull Over?
Obviously, the safest way to eat in your car is to pull to the side of the road or find an out of the way space to put your car in park. Once you are parked you can eat to your heart’s desire without any worry of danger. If time is of the essence and you are not able to stop your car and eat in peace, there are ways to drive, follow the new driving laws for 2016 and eat safely too!
Eyes Up!
Keep in mind that, if you must eat, you must also keep your eyes on road and be constantly aware of your surroundings. We tend to forget that we are controlling a very heavy metal machine on roads filled with other heavy metal machines. Making sure that you pay attention to the road and other drivers (and other possible hazards) around you has to remain the top priority over your delicious lunch.
Hand-Sized
You can cure your gurgling stomach while still looking out for potential problems on the road. There are a variety of foods that are handheld and convenient to eat while driving in your vehicle. Trying to stick to foods that can fit in one hand so you can make sure to keep your other on the steering wheel will make eating while driving easier. You can stick with snack foods like a granola bar or banana, but if you want something more substantial, you can stop by whatever fast food joint you are passing by and grab a burrito or hamburger.
Tray or Box It
Certain spots like In-N-Out offer you an open box with your food in it, so you can easily place the box in your passenger’s seat (or on your passenger’s lap) to grab handfuls of french fries while you keep your eyes on the road ahead of you. Keeping your food in a box or open bag can also prevent those unfortunate spills that will take your focus off the road. What
Slowly
Another way to remain safe while eating in your car is by taking your time. While you may wish your car could fly on autopilot while you take your hands off the wheel to consume your treats, eating slowly may keep you out of harm’s way. You will get to enjoy your well-deserved food and enjoy your journey, all at the same time. Trying to consume foods that are not messy can also help you stay safe.
No Sauce!
We have all had that moment when we are rushing and stuffing our face and the burrito explodes to an even bigger mess than what it started as. The less sauce a food requires, the lower the possibility that it will end up on your lap – or worse – your car’s interior. Although cleaning a leather car interior is easy if you have the right cleaning products, no one wants to stop their trip to get out of their car and clean up the food you should have been enjoying.
In our busy worlds, we are trying to fit as many things as possible in the shortest amount of time. Sometimes this means eating while driving, and everyone has done it at one time or another. While keeping yourself fed is an important part of life, it is even more important to remember to stay safe while driving, no matter what type of multi-tasking you are attempting.
