Some actors earn a bad reputation for their primadonna antics on the sets of TV shows and movies. Many actors who work together on a TV show for several seasons often describe their working relationships like being in a large family. However, like most families, there can be one or two people who make life difficult for the rest.
On the set of a TV show, that can be an actor who plays up when the cameras aren’t on them, and it can cause friction. Actors often come with big personalities, so putting those together can lead to difficult clashes. It can mean people don’t want to work with certain stars because they know it’s going to be challenging to deal with such a large personality.
Showrunners are then forced to make a decision, do they keep the cast together or do they cut someone to ease tensions? These are the actors who were given their marching orders from their roles due to bad behavior.
Jon Polito – Homicide: Life on the Street
Jon Polito seemed to have a pretty secure role in the crime drama ‘Homicide: Life on the Street.’ The actor portrayed Detective Crosetti for two seasons but disappeared from our screens mysteriously.
Polito was given a break from the show as the producers wanted to diversify the cast, replacing him with a few female characters. The actor was told he would be brought back, but Polito allegedly badmouthed the showrunners, so they swiftly changed the storyline to make Crosetti pass away.
Thomas Gibson – Criminal Minds
Crime drama ‘Criminal Minds’ has been on our screens for years as we follow criminal profilers getting into the mindsets of fugitives. Thomas Gibson portrayed the main cast character Aaron ‘Hotch’ Hotchner, who was the head of the FBI’s Behavioural Analysis Unit.
Although Gibson had a major role in the series, he wasn’t irreplaceable. The actor could reportedly have drastic mood swings that saw him become abusive and confrontational with other staff. The showrunners couldn’t have that atmosphere backstage, so they wrote Gibson out of ‘Criminal Minds.’
Janet Hubert – The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Even though she was part of one of the most popular sitcoms of all time, Janet Hubert just couldn’t stand some aspects of the job. Hubert portrayed Aunt Vivian in ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,’ but she didn’t like sharing the set with Will Smith.
The actress continues to hold a grudge with Will Smith to this day, and that is understood to be the reason why she was written out of the sitcom. Hubert couldn’t look past her differences with Smith and blames the star for ruining her career.
Charlie Sheen – Two and a Half Men
We’re sure Charlie Sheen felt invincible on the set of ‘Two and a Half Men.’ Sheen might have starred in a show loosely based on his life, but he proved that you shouldn’t rock the boat too hard. The actor had a highly publicized meltdown, during which he criticized the ‘Two and a Half Men’ creator, Chuck Lorre.
The actor called Lorre a “maggot” and said he hates him. It wasn’t a huge shock to see Sheen written out of the show and replaced by Ashton Kutcher following those comments.
Selma Blair – Anger Management
Considering the name of the show, the stars of ‘Anger Management’ needed to learn to deal with their issues with each other better. Selma Blair didn’t get along with Charlie Sheen in the sitcom, and she was reportedly axed from ‘Anger Management’ after feuding with her co-star.
The actress claimed that Sheen was being wholly unprofessional, but the star denied it and promised to quit if Blair remained part of the show. The producers were forced to choose between the two stars, which saw Blair booted from the show.
Roseanne Barr – Rosanne
There aren’t many shows that could survive axing its main star, but that seems to be the case for ‘Roseanne.’ The sitcom starred Roseanne Barr, and it first hit our screens during the 1990s, but it was rebooted in recent years with plenty of praise.
Although Barr has made a name for herself for making shocking comments, when she made a comparison that appeared racist, the producers took action. Barr was fired from her own show, but it was renamed ‘The Conners’ and continued without its star.
Danny Masterson – The Ranch
Danny Masterson teamed back up with Ashton Kutcher when he joined the cast of the sitcom ‘The Ranch.’ After two seasons of starring in the series, allegations began to surface regarding Masterson’s behavior toward women on the set.
The accusations were pretty severe, and the LAPD had launched an investigation into his behavior. Although all of these allegations were being thrown at Masterson, it wasn’t until months later that his character was axed from ‘The Ranch’ and written out of season three.
Steve Burns – Blue’s Clues
There were plenty of rumors flying around whenever Steve Burns mysteriously disappeared from the children’s educational TV series ‘Blue’s Clues.’ People didn’t understand what could have made him vanish into thin air without an explanation, but his reason for leaving wasn’t so dramatic.
Many years after disappearing from our screens, Burns explained why he left the show, and it was because he was losing his hair. Even though he had been nominated for an Emmy in 2001, Burns decided to leave the show behind in 2002.
Patrick Dempsey – Grey’s Anatomy
Fans of the medical drama ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fell in love with Patrick Dempsey’s character, Dr. Derek Shepherd. Unfortunately for the show’s fans, he was written out of the series in a dramatic demise during season 11.
It was a huge shock for many fans to see Dempsey leave the show, but it was his reported backstage actions that caused the dismissal. Dempsey was rumored to have begun an affair with a member of the staff on set, and his behavior became a liability.
Nicollette Sheridan – Desperate Housewives
The ABC comedy drama ‘Desperate Housewives’ was a worldwide hit, and it created stars of its cast members. Although many people’s reputations were enhanced by being in ‘Desperate Housewives,’ Nicollette Sheridan’s didn’t.
The actor portrayed Edie Britt, and she reportedly didn’t get along with either her fellow cast members of the showrunner, Marc Cherry. Those tensions proved to be too much by the fifth season, and Edie suffered a fatal electrocution. Sheridan later sued Cherry for wrongful dismissal and assault, although she lost her case.
John Amos – Good Times
The sitcom ‘Good Times’ was a groundbreaking moment in television as it was the first family comedy to star African-Americans. John Amos starred in the series as James Evans, and he thought that the show was going to tackle some bigger issues than it did.
The star wanted the show to focus on issues across the African-American community, but instead, the focus was shifted to James’ son, J.J. Amos wasn’t happy with the showrunners, but his character was involved in a fatal car accident.
Michael Pitt – Boardwalk Empire
An actor’s reputation is important because if they become known for being difficult to work with, the offers will start to dry up. Michael Pitt was not only written out of Boardwalk Empire due to his alleged behavior but also dropped by his agent.
The actor portrayed Jimmy Darmody on the crime drama, but reports of unprofessional behavior saw him written out. Pitt was accused of turning up late to set, costing the production crew extra money, and so he was given a dramatic exit from the series.
Lisa Bonet – A Different World
Lisa Bonet was one of the biggest stars on television when she starred in ‘The Cosby Show.’ However, after a racy photoshoot, Bill Cosby didn’t want her anywhere near the shoe, so Bonet got her own spin-off series, ‘A Different World.’
By this stage in her life, Bonet had married Lenny Kravitz, and she was pregnant with their baby. Although Bonet pitched the idea of her character being pregnant, Cosby didn’t like it, and she was written out of that show too.
Elisabeth Rohm – Angel
Some actors are lucky to leave one show behind because they are getting a bigger role in something else. Elisabeth Rohm was cast in the supernatural crime drama ‘Angel’ as Detective Kate Lockley in 2001. She starred as a tough LA cop who teamed up with Angel, a vampire, to catch demons.
Rohm didn’t stick around helping Angel out for too long, however, and after two seasons she was written out. The actress landed a role as Serena Southerlyn on ‘Law and Order,’ and her character never returned to ‘Angel.’
Charisma Carpenter – Angel
Charisma Carpenter rose to fame playing Cordelia Chase in the supernatural teen series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer.’ She reported that role for the series spin-off, ‘Angel,’ as she helped the titular character hunt demons across Los Angeles.
When Carpenter fell pregnant during the series, her pregnancy was written into the show, and it seemed like she would be sticking around for good. Although Carpenter’s pregnancy was written into the show, after she gave birth Cordelia fell into a coma and never woke up.
Leah Remini – The Talk
Leah Remini took to hosting the talk show ‘The Talk’ like a duck to water. Remini quickly became a fan-favorite on the show, and it was clear she was a good fit with the rest of the lineup. Or so it appeared, but there was one person on ‘The Talk’ who Remini didn’t get along with.
Remini and Holly Peete reportedly had several issues with Sharon Osbourne, and there was only ever going to be one winner. Remini insists she was kicked off the show because Osbourne didn’t like her.
Robert Downey Jr. – Ally McBeal
It might be hard to imagine anyone firing Robert Downey Jr. today, but during the actor’s past, he wasn’t invincible. The actor had a much-publicized narcotics problem in the past, and when it reared its head once more during his time on ‘Ally McBeal,’ the star was shown the door.
Downey Jr. played Larry Paul in the legal drama, and his character was even scheduled to marry Ally McBeal. However, once the showrunners discovered Downey Jr.’s past struggles had returned, they didn’t waste any time in writing him out.
Shane Gillis – Saturday Night Live
An issue for any stand-up comedian who makes their name on shocking material is that it will always hang around them. Shane Gillis relied on such shock value during his early stand-up routines, and after finding success, he became part of Saturday Night Live’s lineup.
People wanted to know who the new guy in the lineup was, and when they found some of his older, more socially unacceptable material, the knives were drawn. Gillis was removed from Saturday Night Live’s lineup just four days after he joined.
Raymond Cruz – Breaking Bad
Although he was part of one of the biggest TV shows of all time, Raymond Cruz wanted to be written out of ‘Breaking Bad.’ The actor played Tuco Salamanca in the hit crime drama, but he struggled with the energy he brought to the role.
That crazed look in his eye took a lot out of Cruz, and even though he was penned for a further eight episodes, he walked away. Cruz got what he wished for after Tuco came to a sticky end in the series.
McLean Stevenson – M*A*S*H
Just because you have a starring role in one of the biggest TV shows doesn’t mean your job is safe. McLean Stevenson found that out the hard way when was axed from ‘M*A*S*H.’ Stevenson played Lt. Henry Blake, but he wasn’t happy with his character’s lack of screen time.
Whenever the actor complained to the producers, he found himself looking for a new job. Stevenson discovered that ‘M*A*S*H’ wasn’t so bad after all when he struggled to find another role as big after leaving.
Valerie Harper – Valerie
Valerie Harper must have felt like she was invincible when it came to the sitcom ‘Valerie.’ The show was named after her, so we can understand why she felt in a position of power. Despite being the star of the show, NBC held firm when Harper came to them asking for more money.
The network denied Harper’s request to get paid better, and she was fired after two seasons. The show was renamed ‘The Hogan Family’ after Harper was fired, and it ran for four more seasons.
T.J. Miller – Silicon Valley
People who worked with T.J. Miller on the comedy series ‘Silicon Valley’ felt like the actor was one of the best when he was having a good day. However, there were also alleged complaints of the star turning up late or unprepared for shoots, and he exhibited a volatile temper.
Miller starred in four seasons of ‘Silicon Valley’ before his character was written out of the series. There were claims that Miller leaving the show was a mutual decision, but his behavior on set cast doubts on those theories.
Lee Norris – Boy Meets World
Before TV audiences knew Lee Norris as Marvin ‘Mouth’ McFadden in the teen drama ‘One Tree Hill,’ he was known for playing Stuart Minkus in ‘Boy Meets World.’ Norris portrayed the geeky character in the first season, but despite having a main role, he didn’t return for season two.
The actor did return as a guest star for the fifth season, but fans of the sitcom were confused about where the character went. The character tried to explain his absence by claiming he had moved homerooms.
Robbie Rist – The Brady Bunch
A TV show can be at the mercy of its audience, and if people stop tuning in, the series will be canceled. Even though ‘The Brady Bunch’ was a hugely popular sitcom, by its fifth and final season, fans had grown tired of it.
All of the kids in the series were growing older, so the showrunners injected some youth into it by casting Robbie Rist as Cousin Oliver. Fans found the new addition to the family annoying, but before Oliver was written out, ‘The Brady Bunch’ was canceled.
Lynn Redgrave – House Calls
TV audiences couldn’t believe it when it was announced that Lynn Redgrave would be leaving the sitcom ‘House Calls’ during the 1980s. Redgrave played Ann Atkinson, who helped tie the medical comedy together as a hospital administrator.
Universal Studios released a statement regarding Redgrave’s release, claiming a dispute over pay was the reason she was written out. Redgrave later published a transcript of a call between her and execs that backed up her claim she was fired from the show for nursing her baby on the set.
Jeffrey Tambor – Transparent
While on the set of the comedy-drama ‘Transparent,’ Jeffrey Tambor earned a reputation for having quite the temper on him. However, it wasn’t his temper that landed the actor in hot water.
In 2017 his former assistant made allegations of misconduct against him, and several others came forward at the same time. ‘Transparent’ hadn’t wrapped up its story, but Tambor was written out of the show, and it continued without him for its final season in 2019.
Hartley Sawyer – The Flash
Hartley Sawyer is perhaps a lesson to many people about the dangers of social media. He was starring in the hit comic book series ‘The Flash’ as The Elongated Man, but soon his world came crumbling down.
Sawyer had been making some reportedly questionable social media posts, and once his network found out, he was axed from ‘The Flash.’ Warner Bros. explained the Sawyer was fired immediately, and the company wouldn’t tolerate any threatening or abusive language directed at anyone.
Jessica Biel – 7th Heaven
When Jessica Biel was cast as Mary Camden in ‘7th Heaven,’ she had a wholesome image the show wanted her to maintain. As Biel grew older, she tried to break out from this mold, and she started to rebel.
After cutting her hair short and dying it blonde, Biel pushed ‘7th Heaven’ executive too far by posing for a popular magazine. This wasn’t the image the show wanted to portray for Mary, and it didn’t take long for Biel to be fired from ‘7th Heaven.’
Stana Katic – Castle
All of the pieces seemed to come together for one of the most exciting police procedural dramas in decades when ‘Castle’ hit our screens in 2009. Despite appearing in the series from the beginning, Stana Katic was mysteriously axed from the show for season nine.
The fans wanted an answer from the showrunners, but they weren’t given one, and Katic’s character, Kate Beckett, was gone. Unfortunately for the show, it didn’t realize how important Katic was to its success, and a month after axing her, it got canceled.
Lisa Robin Kelly – That ‘70s Show
Unfortunately, Lisa Robin Kelly’s story is a sad one. She was cast in the sitcom ‘That ‘70s Show’ as Laurie Forman but struggled with substance abuse. Kelly was written out of the show during the third season, and to explain her sudden disappearance, the writers sent Laurie to beauty school.
Lisa Robin Kelly made several appearances throughout the fourth season, but her role was recast after season five. While the show moved on and without Kelly, the actress continued to struggle with her addiction, and she passed away in 2013.
Taylor Momsen – Gossip Girl
When Taylor Momsen first appeared in the teen drama ‘Gossip Girl,’ she played ‘good girl’ Jenny Humphrey. When Jenny started her downward spiral along a darker path, it seemed that Momsen was mimicking her character in reality. Momsen began wearing dark makeup and started making outspoken comments in the press.
Her behavior grew to be erratic and unreliable, so the showrunners felt there was little option but to write Jenny out of the show. Things worked out okay for Momsen, who became the frontwoman of rock band The Pretty Reckless.
Kal Penn – House
Fans of the medical drama ‘House’ were used to things taking a turn for the unexpected throughout the series. However, the way Kal Penn left the show as Lawrence Kutner caught many people by surprise. The actor had been reportedly dismissed from the show, but the truth of the matter was much more pleasant than that.
Penn had actually been offered a public appointment at the White House, and there was no way he could turn that down, so Kutner was written out of the series.
Clayne Crawford – Lethal Weapon
Clayne Crawford played the roguish cop Martin Riggs in the TV series version of ‘Lethal Weapon.’ Although his character might have been a bit of a loose cannon, the showrunners didn’t expect the actor to be the same when the cameras weren’t rolling.
However, Crawford gained a reputation for being hard to work with due to moments of violent anger toward the show’s staff. Crawford was promptly written out of the show following his behavior, and he was replaced before the third season aired.
Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros – Lost
Fans of ‘Lost’ were left reeling when two of the show’s popular characters were fatally wounded during season two. Michelle Rodriguez played Ana Lucia Cortez, while Cynthia Watros portrayed Libby Smith. It seemed like both characters were going to stick around, but both of their storylines were cut short.
Although fans thought this was all part of the story, what was happening in the stars’ personal lives may have contributed. Both Rodriguez and Watros were given DUIs around that time, and it seems the showrunners wrote them both out.
Gavan O’Herlihy – Happy Days
There has been a long history of sitcom characters disappearing off the face of the Earth without an explanation, and it all stems back to ‘Happy Days.’ The phrase ‘Chuck Cunningham Syndrome’ is used to explain a sitcom character’s mysterious disappearance.
This phrase was created thanks to Chuck Cunningham, who was the original character to disappear without a trace. He was portrayed by Gavan O’Herlihy, who wanted to leave the show to star in movies, so he walked up the stairs to never return.
Christopher Abbot – Girls
Although many actors are not given a choice about leaving a show, sometimes they are the ones who decide to walk away. Christopher Abbot played Charlie Dattolo in the comedy ‘Girls,’ and he shocked fans when his character left after just two seasons.
The actor later explained that he could no longer find a way to connect with his character and wanted to leave the series behind. Report of creative differences with the show’s creator, Lena Dunham, also surfaced but didn’t prove to be true.
Maggie Roswell – The Simpsons
If an actor is replaced in an animated show, their character can remain but the person doing the voice changes. Maggie Roswell managed to burn her bridges on ‘The Simpsons’ so badly that her character, Maude Flanders, was written out of the series.
Maude was bumped off after Roswell began to complain about her pay. Roswell’s issue was that she didn’t receive a raise after the price of air travel increased. She upset the wrong people as they completely wrote her and her character out of ‘The Simpsons’ for good.
Jay Thomas – Cheers
Jay Thomas learned the hard way that it doesn’t pay to insult your cast members. The actor portrayed Eddie LeBec on the hit sitcom ‘Cheers,’ and his character was best-known for being Carla Tortelli’s hockey-playing boyfriend.
It seemed there was something about working on ‘Cheers’ that Thomas didn’t like, and he revealed his issue while hosting a morning show. Thomas said working on ‘Cheers’ was hard because he had to kiss Rhea Perlman, and once the actress heard this remark, she got the actor written off the show.
Columbus Short – Scandal
Although the show’s name was ‘Scandal,’ the producers couldn’t have predicted things would get so dramatic for one cast member of the political thriller. Columbus Short starred as Harrison Wright, one of the main characters and litigators, before he was written out of the series.
The issues for Short were off the set, where he was accused of domestic abuse by his wife. Short pleaded guilty to those charges, while also being reportedly involved in assaulting a man and having substance abuse issues.
Bellamy Young – Scrubs
Medical sitcom ‘Scrubs’ was a hit with TV audiences, but not every character was a beloved as Dr. Cox or J.D. Bellamy Young was brought into the show in season three to star as Dr. Grace Miller who would go head-to-head with Dr. Cox.
Unfortunately for Young, fans of the show just didn’t like her character, and the showrunners were forced to make a decision. They chose to write her out of the show, having Dr. Miller walk out of the hospital one day to never return again.
Mackenzie Phillips – One Day at a Time
The showrunners of ‘One Day at a Time’ clearly believed in Mackenzie Phillips after giving the star two chances to be in the show. Phillips was first cast as Julie Cooper in the sitcom in 1975, but by 1980, her behavior on set was becoming unstable.
It meant the showrunners fired her, but they gave her another opportunity to shine in season nine. However, Phillips hadn’t overcome her addiction to narcotics, and after collapsing on set, she was fired for a second time.
Mischa Barton – The O.C.
Teenage TV fans were enjoying the new millennium thanks to the hit drama series ‘The O.C.’ It followed the ups and downs of rich Californian teenagers, with Mischa Barton playing Marissa Cooper. Fans may have loved Barton’s performances, but the showrunners had a problem with the actor’s behavior on set.
Barton was reportedly very demanding backstage, and she didn’t get along with some cast members. The writers felt it was best if she left the show, and they ended Marissa Cooper’s life in a fatal car accident.
Dominic Monaghan – Lost
After starring in the Lord of the Rings movies, Dominic Monaghan was a big name among the cast members of ‘Lost.’ This mysterious drama had fans coming up with wild theories about what every detail meant and how the story would play out.
Monaghan played Charlie Pace, a troubled musician, and he was reportedly unhappy about the size of his part. The actor expected a bigger role, and, after having to work with his ex Evangeline Lilly, Monaghan was actually relieved to be written out of the series.
Suzanne Somers – Three’s Company
Suzanne Somers was one of the biggest names in television when she appeared on our screens in the sitcom ‘Three’s Company.’ While she was a big name back in the 1980s, today few people have heard of her after she was written out of her show.
Somers reportedly made demands that she be paid an equal fee to her male co-stars, but the network refused and didn’t renew her contract. Unfortunately, the struggle for equal pay remains an issue today, despite being raised by stars like Somers decades ago.
Mandy Patinkin – Criminal Minds
You might think that actors signing up for a crime show that profiles dangerous criminals would be prepared for the subject matter their character is involved with. Despite knowing how gruesome ‘Criminal Minds’ was going to be, Mandy Patinkin struggled to connect with the show.
Patinkin found the gruesome details to be a bit too much to handle, and he requested to be written out of ‘Criminal Minds.’ The actor felt the violent subject matter was becoming a heavy burden that was destructive to his soul.
Dana Plato – Diff’rent Strokes
Dana Plato starred in the sitcom ‘Diff’rent Strokes’ as Kimberly Drummond, and the teen star earned many fans during her time on the show. Plato played the girl-next-door, and she was even considered to be one of the greatest child actors of her generation.
Despite such positive acclaim, when Plato fell pregnant she was soon dropped from the show. In fact, the studio allegedly fired her the moment it discovered she was with child. Plato would struggle to find work following her dismissal, and her career never fully recovered.
Jeremy Clarkson – Top Gear
The British car show ‘Top Gear’ was loved by audiences not only in the United Kingdom, but around the world. The show’s original host, Jeremy Clarkson, had become synonymous with ‘Top Gear,’ but he proved that no one is bigger than their series.
Clarkson had an argument with a producer that resulted in a physical attack, and his days as host of the show were numbered from that moment. The host was fired from the show, but he did show some grace in apologizing for his actions.
Megyn Kelly – Megyn Kelly Today
People in the public eye have to be extra careful with the words that come out of their mouths. As the host of ‘Megyn Kelly Today,’ this public figure’s world came crashing down in 2018. Kelly said some inappropriate things about Halloween costumes, and it landed her in a lot of trouble as far as her show was concerned.
Although Kelly immediately apologized for the things that she said, she couldn’t turn back time. The host was fired just over a year after her show aired for the first time.
Kevin Hunter – The Wendy Williams Show
Kevin Hunter had enjoyed the role of executive producer on ‘The Wendy Williams Show,’ but things turned sour between him and the talk show host. Not only was Hunter the executive producer, but he was also married to Williams. Although the details were kept between Williams and Hunter, something pretty serious must have happened for such a dramatic ending.
Hunter was booted from not only the show, but also Williams’ life. Despite their differences, Williams reportedly wished her husband well for a future that wouldn’t involve her.
Brett Butler – Grace Under Fire
Brett Butler starred as the titular character, Grace, in the comedy series ‘Grace Under Fire.’ The ABC show focused on Grace as she dealt with the problems of being a single mother while also trying to overcome an abusive ex-husband. Unfortunately, Brett Butler would develop her own issues following an addiction to subscription medication during the fourth and fifth seasons.
After three seasons, the show’s popularity took a nosedive, and execs were so exhausted dealing with Butler that they decided to cancel the show after season five.
John Rhys-Davies – Sliders
Sometimes an actor simply can’t hide their contempt for the show they star in. John Rhys-Davies was cast as Professor Maximillion Arturo in the fantasy and science fiction series ‘Sliders,’ but he didn’t enjoy the role. The actor, who went on to feature in the Lord of the Rings movies, had problems with the writing…
Claiming the writer was unintelligent and useless. Rhys-Davies felt the show’s subject matter was “incomprehensible gibberish,” so it’s not a surprise he was written out after Arturo suffered a fatal gunshot wound.
Jaimee Foxworth – Family Matters
Fans of the sitcom ‘Family Matters’ are still wondering what happened to Jaimee Foxworth’s character, Judy Winslow. At the end of season four, Judy was sent to her room by her parents, only for her to never return.
The family never made any comment about Judy and just carried on throughout the following seasons of the show, forgetting she ever existed. Reports claim that producers felt there were too many kids in the Winslow family, so Judy was cut to give Steve Urkel more air time.
T.R. Knight – Grey’s Anatomy
We’re sure T.R. Knight would have loved to remain part of the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ cast, but circumstances led to the actor leaving the show in 2009. Knight portrayed Dr. George O’Malley, and his character passed away following a dispute between the actor and his colleagues backstage.
