The Title of Your Book?
Franchise Your Business: The Guide to Employing the Greatest Growth Strategy Ever
Why did you write the book?
I felt people needed a source of information to understand franchising. It is not a get rich quick scheme. It needs to focus on franchisee success to thrive.
What was your biggest surprise or aha moment when writing your book?
This is a second edition, with the first published six years ago. The biggest surprise in updating the book was seeing how much some things had changed in the area of franchise marketing. While I knew the state of the art, looking back at the market only six years ago helped me realize the speed of change.
Who is your ideal audience for the book?
Successful business owners who are considering expanding their businesses.
Tell us, how do you deal with fear?
What is fear?
In all seriousness, to fear something, you need to have an outcome that you are not prepared to face.
I do get a bit jittery every time my plane takes off. And I say some prayers.
Tell us, how do you deal with rejection?
This will occasionally happen to me in the course of business. And since I know I have the best company in my industry, I try to analyze why people made the choice that they did. So research and (hopefully) objective analysis, followed by corrective action.
Tell us two concepts or ideas you want the reader to takeaway?
1. How do you determine if a business can and should be franchised?
2. If so, how do you go about franchising a business the right way? (or, if not, what are alternatives?
Name one of the biggest challenges you have faced writing your book and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge was time. My goal is to spend as much time as possible with my clients trying to help them succeed. And anything that takes away from that is counterproductive. I ended up doing a lot of the writing on weekends and on vacation. The first edition of the book, for example, was written over the course of seven years, for eight hours each morning in Hawaii over the course or seven ten-day vacations there – with a year’s hiatus in between drafting. I would get up early and finish writing by 1 or 2, in time to get some afternoon pool time and go to dinner.
What’s a personal self-talk, mantra, affirmation, or self-belief that contributes to your success?
Everything always works out if you treat people right.
