Improving Your Position In The Workplace

There’s a lot to be said for trying harder in the workplace. If you’re tired of just being an average worker who “does well” and gets everything in on time then you might need to take another look at your job role. Many of us fall into the trap of doing the bare minimum, and it’s completely understandable that we do so. Going to work every day of the week becomes a repetitive process, and repetitive processes quickly form habits in our brains. When that happens, you’re likely to do things absent-mindedly within the workplace and fail to really progress your position forwards.

If you want to get a promotion to a more senior role within your company or simply do more to impress your boss and simply get a raise then you need to break the habit. You need to view each day as a different challenge and set yourself different goals and projects to keep things interesting. Challenge your brain, and step out of your comfort zone so that you actually have to work hard and start thinking again. Here are some ways in which you can step out of the easy routine and start improving your position in the workplace by taking risks.

Balance personal and business life well.

This may seem like a strange suggestion, but think about things from the perspective of your employer. When they hired you, they hired a personality; they’d already seen your credentials, but they wanted to see that you were a good fit for the company. Even if it’s a tech firm and you feel as if you all live within a digital bubble on your screens, collaboration between people is still important.

You might have to deal with employees and customers within your role, so your personality is still important. You need to learn to balance work and business life because working too much can be a bad thing; it’s important that you’re still a human outside of work. If colleagues are heading to a local bar after work then you should join them because being a team should be something that happens naturally and organically. You don’t have to just be nice to people in the workplace and then ignore them past 5 o’clock.

Prove your commitment to the role.

Bla. Getting extra qualifications is also a great way to prove to your employer how committed you are to the company. You could even consider a graduate diploma in project management to demonstrate your willingness to start leading teams within the business because that shows you don’t view the company as a paycheck. You’re not here to clock in at 9 and clock out at 5; you’re showing that you’re genuinely invested in the company and want a future there. That’s promotion material.

Positivity.

At the end of the day, your attitude says everything. If you want to improve your position within the company in terms of job role and in terms of how your co-workers view you then your attitude is everything. Start to view projects positively and you’ll find that your perspective is contagious. Remember to value the things you do well as well as the things you do wrong; and do the same for your colleagues.
