Jamie Foxx is sharing new details about the medical complication that led to his April 2023 hospitalization in Atlanta.
In a TikTok video shared by Dr. Brenda Combs on Sunday, the 56-year-old actor is shown telling a group of people in Phoenix, Arizona, what led to his health scare last year.
“Look, April 11 last year, bad headache. I asked my boy for an Advil,” Jamie recalls. “I was gone for 20 days. I don’t remember anything.”
“So they told me — I’m in Atlanta — so they told me, my sister and my daughter took me to the first doctor,” he says, referencing his daughter, Corinne Foxx, and sister, Deidra Dixon. “They gave me a cortisone shot.”
“The next doctor said something’s going on up there,” Jamie adds as he points to his head.
“I won’t say it on camera,” he continues. “But it was…”
News of Jamie’s hospitalization first surfaced on April 12, one day after Jamie was spotted on the set of his project with Cameron Diaz, Back in Action. Corinne revealed that her father had experienced a health scare, and was on the road to recovery.
“We wanted to share that, my father, Jamie Foxx, experienced a medical complication yesterday,” Corinne said at the time. “Luckily, due to quick action and great care, he is already on his way to recovery.”
“We know how beloved he is and appreciate your prayers. The family asks for your privacy at this time,” she added.
Nearly a month later, Jamie finally broke his silence when he took to Instagram on May 3 to thank his fans for their support.
“Appreciate all the love!!! Feeling blessed,” he wrote.
Following his hospitalization, Jamie underwent physical rehabilitation in Chicago, Illinois. His family, including daughters Corinne and Anelise Bishop, were seen visiting the actor at the medical facility where he underwent care and physical therapy, as seen in photos obtained by TMZ. According to the outlet, the hospital facility specializes in rehabilitation for those who have suffered from a stroke, spinal trauma and traumatic brain injury.
Three months after his hospitalization, Jamie appeared to be in good spirits when he was spotted for the first time cruising along the Chicago River in a large boat in July.
He also posted a message to X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Boat life. Celebrating summer with @brownsugarbbn. Stay blessed!”
That same month, a source told ET that the Oscar winner was “doing so much better and is getting back to being himself.”
“He has been talking to people about his work projects and looking forward to the future,” the source said. “He feels grateful that his recovery has been going well.”
Not long after, Jamie opened up about his health scare to his fans on Instagram, posting a three-minute video in which he spoke directly into the camera.
“I went through something that I thought I would never, ever go through,” he shared.
“I know a lot of people were waiting or wanting to hear updates but to be honest with you, I just didn’t want you to see me like that man,” Jamie explained. “I want you to see me laughing, having a good time partying, cracking a joke, doing a movie, television show. I didn’t want you to see me with tubes running out of me and trying to figure out if I was gonna make it through.”
While he didn’t disclose details about what exactly happened, Jamie credited Deidra and Corinne for saving his life. “To them, to God, to a lot of great medical people, I’m able to leave you this video,” he said. “I cannot tell you how great it feels to have your family kick in in such a way, and y’all know they kept it airtight. They didn’t let nothing out. They protected me, and that’s what I hope that everyone could have in moments like these.”
“I went to hell and back, and my road to recovery had some potholes as well,” Jamie confessed. “But I’m coming back and I’m able to work.”
In August 2023, Jamie revealed that he was on the mend and finally starting to feel like himself again.
“You’re lookin at a man who is thankful… finally startin to feel like myself…” he wrote on Instagram. “It’s been an unexpected dark journey… but I can see the light… I’m thankful to everyone that reached out and sent well wishes and prayers… I have a lot of people to thank… u just don’t know how much it meant… I will be thanking all of you personally… and if you didn’t know… GOD IS GOOD… all day every day… #swipeleft #imbackandimbetter #nobaddays.”
In the months following, he made an appearance at the 2023 Critics Choice Association’s Celebration of Cinema & Television Honoring Black, Latino & AAPI Achievements, where he was honored with the Vanguard Award for his performance in The Burial, and he resumed filming his upcoming Netflix film, Back in Action, with Diaz. He also returned to the Fox competition Beat Shazam after his illness caused him to skip out on season 6.
Just last month, Jamie got emotional as he celebrated Father’s Day for the first time since his medical emergency. On an episode of Beat Shazam, Corinne took a moment to give him a special shout-out in honor of the holiday.
Corinne told her father that although they have a tradition of him telling jokes about “how expensive kids are” and getting emotional, she decided to switch things up this year.
“I’m just going to show you something instead,” the 30-year-old said as a photo of her as a little girl with Jamie popped up on the big screen.
“It really means a lot this year because we have been through a lot, we’ve been through a lot,” Jamie responded after hugging his eldest daughter.
“You’re 100 percent right, we’ve been through so much and this is a very special Father’s Day for a lot of reasons but most importantly because you’re here, Dad, and we’re working together, we’re doing what we love together,” Corrine told Jamie as a picture of her and her younger sister, 15-year-old Anelise, came up.
Corinne continued, “Me and Anelise look up to you so much, we are so grateful for everything that you do for us. You go above and beyond for your family — you guys truly don’t even know how generous this man is, he really goes above and beyond for us. And you deserve the world, Dad.”
