What were the biggest challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge was surviving the first few years without a steady revenue stream. There were times when I wanted to quit and go back to a steady job. But I had great support from my family, my wife told me to continue and find a way. So I kept at it, and then started getting some steady business from big companies. Things started to come together and soon I was hiring employees and becoming well-known as a China consultant. The key is to have a supportive family, staying power, and the belief in yourself.
What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your career?
Maintain your contacts. When I was young, I thought I could do anything and everything on my own. I didn’t keep contacts or maintain relationships.
I do now and it’s key in my success. You always need help.
Who are your biggest influences and people you admire and why?
My first boss, Peter Shen, at Philips Electronics was a great mentor. You always need a mentor when you’re just starting out in a job. Peter taught me about the industry, introduced me to the power players, and took me up the chain as he was promoted.
Name a person who helped you along the way?
Another boss, John Tu, president of Kingston Technology, was also a great influence. He taught me to be humble. No matter how rich, how busy or how important you are, take the time to get to know the janitor in the company, or help the homeless on the streets.
