Profiles of Success with Vicky Oliver.

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your career?

Concentrate on amassing skills, not titles

Who are your biggest influences and people you admire and why?

Richard Bolles, author of What Color is Your Parachute, because his theory is “create a job for yourself”

Name a person who helped you along the way?

I have helped many people get jobs. This past weekend I helped the daughter of a friend of mine by suggesting she sign up for a one on one career counseling program I know about at her college

What do you see as your greatest success in life, so far?

Probably turning my hunch that job hunting books could be better written into my first published book, 301 Smart Answers to Tough Interview Questions

How can people contact you?

vicky@vickyoliver.com

What book would you recommend and why?

I like several books by Seth Godin and also by Malcolm Gladwell. Maybe start with “Blink” by Malcolm Gladwell.

How do you deal with fear?

I take a page from Dale Carnegie. I imagine the worst outcome, and then, taking many deep breaths, figure out how to improve on it. (This question you already asked, btw.)

What’s a personal self-talk, mantra, affirmation or self-belief that contributes to your success?

I have always been a huge fan of Nike’s great tag line, “Just do it.” The words get me over many humps!
