Seekers sour on job prospects

By Mariah Flores, Editor at LinkedIn News

Getting a job (or even holding one) is harder than it looks nowadays — and job seekers are feeling the pressure. According to LinkedIn’s Workforce Confidence survey, job seekers’ confidence has dropped by 9 points since January on a scale from -100 to +100. Hiring freezes in the once-booming tech sector, lengthy interview processes and advances in AI play a hidden role in job seekers’ anxiety levels, reports LinkedIn’s George Anders. Among all U.S. workers — most of whom aren’t looking for new employment— there’s been a milder 4-point confidence drop.

Job hunting is never easy – but if everything seems a bit more daunting right now, you’re not alone.

That’s a key finding from the latest edition of LinkedIn’s Workforce Confidence Index, which surveyed more than 34,000 U.S. professionals over the past five months. Today’s stressors range from tech-sector layoffs to the potentially disruptive impact of artificial intelligence on current work patterns.

Add it all up, and job seekers’ confidence (on a scale ranging from +100 to -100) has declined nine points since January. The overall mood is still a lot steadier than it was during the upheaval of COVID’s first few months, back in 2020. But that’s scant comfort when job seekers are finding that it can take 50 or more applications before an employer says “Yes.” If you want to start a career as an electrician, it’s best to secure a certificate from an electrical trade school before you start searching for jobs. This will help employers know that you’ve had adequate training in this field.
