When you are ready to find a new job, what is one of the first things that you do in order to find the job that is best suited for you? For most people, they are going to immediately get online and search job boards for those positions that are available. They may ask around to those they know to see if they know of any job title that would fit their skills. However, did you know that most people are going about the job hunting process wrong. It comes as a surprise to many people that they should be looking at the companies that they are interested in working with rather than the actual jobs that are listed on job boards.
Why is this the better option? For those who are serious about finding a job that they are going to commit to full time, one of the biggest reasons why people commit long term to a job is that they are working with a company that they trust and that they like. The company is what can make or break a position, even if this is considered your “dream job” to have.
How to Do Your Research
If you are serious about finding a great job, you first need to look at the companies that you are interested in working with. Do a quick search of the companies that are in the field that you want to work in. Many people look at those that are up and coming in the field, while others may be look at those companies that are well established and known to be monster companies in the industry. This is something that you are going to want to decide beforehand.
Once you have a list of companies that you would be interested in working for, be sure that you are taking the time to look into these companies. Don’t simply choose a company by name, be sure that the company is one that has the same morals and beliefs that you stand behind. A few other considerations to make when choosing companies to add to your list:
- How has their digital transformation looked over the years? Is the company progressing with the latest technology, consumer experiences, employee experiences, etc.?
- What type of reviews are they getting from consumers as well as past employees?
- Do they seem to have a long history of open jobs? This could signal that the company has a problem with getting and retaining workers.
- What are the employee benefits communication procedures like? Do they have someone that is ready to stand up for your rights? Do workers tend to talk to one another? These are important questions to ask!
Do your research and make a final list of companies that are definitely worth getting in contact with!
How to Reach Out
So, you have a list of companies that you’re interested in working for, what should you do next? You need to reach out to them! You need to let this company see that you are out there and that you have chosen them as the company that you want to work for. In fact, many companies find the personality of someone who is looking at the company rather than just looking for a job, as someone that they would want on their side. It shows that you have done your homework that you are looking for a position to last for years rather than just a short term gig.
What should you say to these potential companies? For one, you need to let them know that you are looking for a position with them. Don’t just state that you are looking for a job. Make sure that they know you are specifically singling them out! You are going to want to send them your resume that shows just why you would be a benefit to their company. Keep in mind that not every company that you consider on your list is going to be hiring. However, it gives you a step into the doorway. While they may not be hiring, you could make an impression so that when they do hire, they think of what you have to offer!
Remember these tips as well:
- Be humble
- Be kind
- Be courteous
- Be respectful to whoever you talk to
- Keep following up from time to time while you are searching for the perfect location to work at
You want to be respectful as you do not want to burn any bridges before you get a foot into the door!
Researching companies rather than simply searching job boards is for those who are serious about finding a position that they want to keep for the long run. You can work a job just fine, but for those who want a career, they are going to want to be associated with a company that they truly respect.
