X retires Twitter logo

X — formerly known as Twitter — officially replaced its famous blue bird logo on mobile and at its San Francisco headquarters, a week after owner Elon Musk announced a rebrand. The logo switch had a seamless transition, but X’s name remains Twitter on the App Store as Apple doesn’t allow apps to have one character as a name. Meanwhile, San Francisco officials were investigating X for constructing a large logo on its roof without a permit.

  • Elon Musk had a huge X logo put on the roof of its San Francisco headquarters on Friday.
  • City officials are investigating if he had the necessary permits to do so.
  • It comes after Musk ordered the Twitter sign to be removed from the building on Monday.

Elon Musk had a huge “X” logo put on the roof of its headquarters in San Francisco Friday as part of his overhaul of the company formerly known as Twitter.

City officials are now investigating whether it had the necessary permission to install the logo, per The Associated Press.

A planning review and approval is required to have the sign installed for safety reasons, Patrick Hanna of the Department of Building Inspection told the news agency.

It comes after Musk announced last weekend that the company was ditching Twitter and rebranding to X.

The CEO shared a video of the illuminated logo Saturday after joking that the building’s landlord “keeps calling the police about our sign modifications.”

On Monday Musk attempted to get rid of the Twitter sign from the building but police showed up as the installers were removing some of the letters. However, the San Francisco Police Department told Insider that it took no action.

X also changed the company logo from Twitter’s iconic blue bird to a monochrome letter this week on the iOS app, but it appeared to struggle to change the name on the Apple app store. That’s because Apple required a minimum of two characters in the app name, an X user shared.

The complaints section on the Department of Building Inspection website showed that X has two complaints for the logo roof installation and removing the Twitter sign.

The Notice of Violation said the “@” symbol on the Twitter sign was “dangling” and could cause harm to pedestrians if it fell.

X and the Department of Building Inspection didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment from Insider, made outside normal working hours.
