Ride-hailing and delivery firms have won a vote in California that allows them to classify their drivers as independent contractors, The Associated Press reports. In the most expensive ballot measure in the state’s history, companies such as Uber and Lyft rallied behind Proposition 22, which would exempt them from reclassifying their workers as employees eligible for benefits and job protections. The vote ends Uber and Lyft’s “fiercest regulatory battle,” and it could have wider effects on freelance workers across the country.

  • Uber’s core business continues to be affected by pandemic, with the company announcing Thursday that gross bookings had dropped 53% year-over-year in the three months that ended Sept. 30.
