Facebook said Monday that it was buying customer-service software company Kustomer in a likely effort to improve its messaging business. The deal, which The Wall Street Journal reported could be worth just over $1 billion, comes as the social media giant looks to expand its ability to support customer service conversations on its Messenger app using tools like chatbots. The New York Times points out that the acquisition, not yet approved by federal regulators, comes at a time of increased government scrutiny on the company’s dominant market position.
