Acting

As mentioned, if you enjoy acting, your local theater scene is certainly the place for you. You can audition for roles when your local theaters advertise open auditions. Keep an eye on their social media and websites for auditions dates.

Don’t be afraid to stretch your idea of “local” as well. If there is a larger city nearby, there may be many more options for auditions to give you a greater chance of landing a role, even if it is in the ensemble to start. For example, actors from Philadelphia probably come from the surrounding areas as well. If you live in a suburb or small town, you can expand your idea of local to your local big city.

Other Theater-Related Jobs

If you are not interested in acting but have expertise in other areas of theater (or are willing to learn “on the job”), you should certainly look for paid or volunteer roles behind the scenes. There are many roles besides acting that makes a play come together.

If you have previous experience, you may find yourself interviewing for a role of director, stage manager, costume designer, choreographer, or many more. Smaller local theaters would probably also love volunteers to do things behind the scenes like set design and decoration, lighting, and more. Consider what you love about theater, and see if you can learn to assist in that way.

Non-Theater Jobs

If you love theater, but don’t have any experience working on a play, or a desire to act onstage or work behind the scenes, consider how you can use other skills to assist your local theater.

Theaters need graphic designers to design ads and programs, social media managers to run their pages, technology professionals to keep their websites running, ushers to guide theater-goers to their seats, and so much more. The play is the main event, but there are so many other things that need to be done before the show to make it come to life.

If you love theater, there are so many options to become involved in your local theater community. From acting to directing to set design to lighting to ushering, there are options for everyone who wants to work onstage, behind the scenes, or in other ways.

If you enjoy being in and around the theater, consider your previous skills and experience, even if they are not directly related to theater, and see how you can apply them to helping out your local theater.
