Nikola lays off 270 employees

By Tiffany Moustakas, Editor at LinkedIn News

Electric truck company Nikola has laid off 270 people in an attempt to reduce costs and focus on the North American market. Only 900 employees will remain as 150 workers were cut from its European programs and another 120 in Phoenix and Coolidge, Arizona were also impacted. The staff reduction will save the company $50 million annually, with the overall effort reducing spend by almost $400 million by 2024. The cuts come amid a challenging time for Nikola between leadership shakeups and overall cash issues currently affecting several EV startups.

I’ve taken some time to process. From making the push to completing the Two’s for Nikola World 2019, acquiring my CDL to test drive the Two’s, moving from Validation to Wiring and being 1 of 14 people who actually put their hands on the Badger. Building the HV/LV harnesses for that and the WAV. Traveling to Universal Studios for the Like a Bosch shoot with the White Nikola Two. Continuing to make specialty harnesses for these Tre’s to function properly and moving on from wiring to Destructive Battery Testing (back in my wheel house, used to build modules/packs for EV’s in San Jose) to make improvements on the battery packs to make them safer. All the last minute Travel all over the country at various test facilities. To now being part of the 35% that we’re affect by the layoffs. 4 years, it was an incredible ride.

As much as I wanted to see it through to the end, I kinda did. This is the end of an era, because so many of us who were let go, actually worked on the vehicles and kept them running. To the Remaining Validation techs….. Do more with less and keep grinding. Now, I’m off to enjoy my Sunday with these guys. Happy Father’s Day.

I had the opportunity to work at Nikola, and it was such an insightful experience. Being in a work environment where the office is excited to work on an innovative product was so infatuating. Everyone gets to collaborate, share ideas, and learn from each other. The time I spent with Nikola was so impactful. I have become a better engineer, problem solver, and co-worker being at Nikola. I believe in their initiative and product. Unfortunately, Friday was my last day with the company and as of now I am looking for new opportunities going forward. I can’t wait to see what Nikola and I both have in store for the future ahead. Thank for the experience Nikola!
