The Debate Over Reopening Schools

In Chicago, the nation’s third largest school district is on the brink of a teachers strike as educators and city officials wrestle over how to safely reopen schools. On Tuesday, CDC officials indicated students could return to classrooms as long as virus measures were imposed on campuses and in surrounding communities. But experts remain split on whether in-person learning should resume amid the pandemic. Some argue remote schooling is jeopardizing the development and mental health of students, while others warn reopening could mean “gambling teachers’ lives.”
