The U.S. Coast Guard will be leading an investigation into what caused the Titan submersible to implode and kill five people aboard who were heading undersea to see the Titanic wreck last Sunday, The Associated Press reports. There’s no exact timeline for the investigation, but the Coast Guard will be working with authorities in Canada, France and the United Kingdom. OceanGate Expeditions, which operated and owned the Titan, will also investigated as the submersible wasn’t a vessel registered in the U.S. or internationally.
- The probe could “recommend civil or criminal charges,” BBC News writes.
- Authorities in Canada are helping to collect evidence in the St. John’s, Newfoundland port.
- Canadian safety officials also opened their own investigation on Friday, per Reuters.
